The Berlinale awarded their coveted Golden and Silver Bears on Saturday evening, 16.2.1019. These were not only for the long feature films, but also the short films, which are widely regarded as a talent factory for the future. Werkleitz is
therefore extremely pleased to congratulate the winners of two supported productions: EMARE (European Media Artist in Residence Exchange) scholarship holder Manuel Abramovich received the Silver Bear for the best short film for his work Blue Boy, produced with EMARE and Werkleitz, in which seven Romanian sex workers reflect on their jobs. The film shows their faces while they listen to the audio recordings of their own stories.
The EMARE scholarship, initiated by Werkleitz in 1995 and supported by Saxony-Anhalt and the EU, is now awarded annually by the European Media Art Platform to 11 talented media artists throughout Europe.
This year Werkleitz virtually competed with itself: the Golden Bear of the Berlinale 2019 for the best short film went to the production Umbra by Florian Fischer and Johannes Krell, supported by Werkleitz and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung. Umbra is an experimental documentary film that captures visual effects such as the camera obscura and the so-called « Brocken ghost » in nature and turns them into cinematic meditation. These also convinced the international jury.
The young Halle-based production company Rosen Pictures produced the film. Both Rosen Pictures and the two Filmmakers graduated from the Werkleitz Professional Media Master Class, through which they got to know each other. Fischer and Krell already received the Golden Lola – the German Short Film Award – with their second joint short film Kaltes Tal (DE, 2016).
