About\u00a0UNIVERSAL EAR, his residency project\u00a0:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"UniversalWhen we virtualize our culture it becomes vulnerable to evaporating on a hot day or blowing away in the wind. Decay is history evolving. A stone monument remains alive even if blown apart. Its negative imprint stands sturdy in the memory dust. What do we mean when we talk about protecting our \u201cway of life\u201d? Can it be described as an endless reel of gestures and actions (with periods of snoozing)? Could we reduce it to a choreographic score, save it in scrolls and reanimate it? How different would the playback look if it was scored by Edvard Munch or Charles M. Schulz?<\/span><\/p>\n

UNIVERSAL EAR is a lost adventure serial of the future, charting heroic ex-postman Harley Byrne\u2019s ongoing mission: to capture and make available for download \u201call the world\u2019s music, ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Each episode sees Byrne travel to another time and place, where his efforts to find and record humanity\u2019s rarest musics are hindered by his arch-enemy, Being, mysterious mistress of disguise.<\/span><\/p>\n

It has become my own personal mission to (p)reconstruct these as yet unmade pocket adventures, one by one into infinity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by recent developments in \u2018virtual heritage\u2019 \u2013 hologram Buddhas, hologram dead pop stars, 3D printed replicas of the still-smoking remains of Syrian monuments \u2013 I shall follow Harley Byrne to a future Bourges we don\u2019t yet know: a future in which the concrete present overlaps with 3D, hologramatic and augmented reality meta-levels in a manner that is not so much \u2018mixed-reality\u2019 as \u2018mixed-authenticity\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

What will the great-great-granddaughters of today\u2019s heritage ministers consider important enough to preserve in ever-looping projections, town square battles and beheadings that recur in full digital fidelity each day with sharper regularity than the lighting of the street lamps? Which personal accomplishments and disasters will solipsistic curators make virtual space for in the alleys and byways of a city frozen in the past by the technologies of the future? What hymns to sing in the graveyards we\u2019ll build for our virtual PA\u2019s? What bitcrushed cries will echo through these temporal interstices with musical regularity?<\/span><\/p>\n

Graeme Cole<\/strong> is a filmmaker, writer and artist. Working mainly with Super 8 and other consumer formats, his films take the language of narrative-based genre movies and infect them with an absurdist sensibility. By adjusting the rules of the genre and inventing new ones, Mr Cole<\/strong> evokes a parallel world with an alternative cinema. A world where George Kuchar<\/strong> and Sh\u016bji Terayama<\/strong> play the multiplexes. His work celebrates the beautiful folly of humanity by integrating the flaws of our thinking into the structure and aesthetic of each movie. Meta-narratives and open-source laboratory work expand and re-categorize the parameters of Mr Cole<\/strong>\u2019s universe.In September 2013, Mr Cole<\/strong> became the first UK filmmaker to participate on the MFA program at B\u00e9la Tarr\u2019s Film.factory. His first movie under Mr Tarr\u2019s mentorship was filmed, Epizoda?<\/em>\u00a0; two more, Murmurs and Panic<\/em> & Disgust In The 2015th Year<\/em>, are soon to follow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
